Surja Bajracharya, vrouwelijke beeldhouwer uit Nepal

Unique sculpture from Nepal

Surja Bajracharya comes from Patan, the oldest city in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Patan is the city of sculptors, woodworkers, silver and goldsmiths.

Karin van Dakini travels to Nepal twice a year to do her shopping. In 2016 she met Surja for the first time. Surja is the youngest of 5 daughters of a stonemason. Because there were no sons who, according to tradition, could take over the trade and the company of the father, Surja took on the succession. From a young age she hammered and chiseled with her father and now she is a well-known stonemason in Nepal, the only female. In 2012 she even exhibited in Germany.

She usually works sitting on the floor and holds her work with her feet, the small Buddhist medallions that Dakini buys from her are set in a silver border so that they can be worn as a pendant. The pendants are unique works of art with images of Buddhas from Tibetan Buddhism and we are very happy with this new acquisition. They are a very special gift for yourself or someone else because there is no second one available. One of a kind :-)

Below you see Surja at work. The stone used to make the sculptures is Nepalese hardstone from Chobar, a village bordering Patan.
