Theravada Buddhism (Tradition of the Elders)
In Theravada Buddhism of Thailand, much attention is paid to the Birthday Buddha and the associated amulets. Just as almost all of us know under which star sign we were born, such as Aquarius, Scorpio or Aries, every Thai knows their birthday with the corresponding Buddha and color.
For example, the flags at the former Thai king's palace are yellow, because king Bhumibol was born on a Monday and the color that goes with it is yellow. The flags at the queen's palace are blue, because queen Sirikit was born on a Friday and the color that goes with it is blue.
These Birthday Buddhas are believed to offer special protection to those born on this day. It is believed that these Buddhas protect from danger; as well as bring prosperity, happiness, success and well-being.
Almost all temples have images of the Birthday Buddhas, and incense sticks are available for purchase in the colors of the Birthday Buddha.
