How do you use a singing bowl?
Share
A singing bowl is used for relaxation, meditation, and sound therapy. The vibrations and sounds help you bring peace to your body and mind. What do you need? A singing bowl, a mallet (wood, felt, or leather), and a soft surface (a singing bowl cushion or your own hand).
How do you do this?
- Sit quietly, adopt a relaxed posture and ensure a calm environment
- Place the singing bowl on a cushion or hold it loosely in your hand. Make sure the bowl can vibrate freely.
- Striking the bowl: Gently strike the rim of the bowl with the mallet. Let the sound play out completely.
- Singing: Place the mallet upright against the outer rim and make slow, circular motions. Apply light, even pressure until the bowl begins to "sing."
- Listen and feel. If necessary, close your eyes and focus on the sound, the vibration, and let it sink in. Breathe in and out calmly.
- Let the sound die away slowly and take a moment to feel it.
Tips: Use gentle movements; force is not necessary. Practice regularly to get a feel for the sound. Each bowl has a unique sound, and each mallet produces a different sound, as does the surface you use. Discover what works best for you and how. View and listen to our singing bowls here.
Here's a video from my friend Monica with a little demonstration of how to use a singing bowl.
